Everyone is raving about the new artificial intelligence ChatGPT and how it is revolutionising so many aspects of our lives.

If you haven't discovered it yet, it's rather like Alexa on steroids. Ask it anything and it delivers some outstanding results. It's power to provide so much, is something that only the realms of science fiction, could have imagined a few years ago.

Last night, I talked about chatGPT with my son. He had recently used it to create his dinner recipe. All he did was ask it to give him a simple recipe, for a tasty and nutritious dinner using the ingredients he typed in. In a few seconds he had an amazing recipe with all the steps and instructions outlined perfectly! I decided to play with it myself on a variety of tasks and subjects.

Recently, I'd read on social media, opinions about the Spiritualists' National Union Seven Principles - asking for thoughts about whether they needed to be changed. So I asked chatGPT and the results were impressive.

I phrased my question as:

'Are the seven principles of Spiritualism a barrier to new seekers?'

The reply:

"While Spiritualism within the Spiritualists' National Union, could offer a flexible and adaptable framework for personal growth, it is important to address the potential drawbacks that may deter new seekers.

One such issue is the Seven Principles of Spiritualism, which some consider being archaic and out of touch with the needs of the modern individual.

The Seven Principles of Spiritualism, originally developed in the 19th century, are:

  1. The Fatherhood of God
  2. The Brotherhood of Man
  3. The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels
  4. The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul
  5. Personal Responsibility
  6. Compensation and Retribution Hereafter for all the Good and Evil Deeds done on Earth
  7. Eternal Progress Open to Every Human Soul

While these principles provide a foundation for Spiritualist beliefs, they may not resonate with all seekers, particularly those who come from non-religious or secular backgrounds.

The language and concepts used in the principles, such as "Fatherhood of God" and "Ministry of Angels," can be seen as rooted in traditional religious thought, which may not appeal to those seeking a more contemporary and inclusive approach to spirituality.

To address this issue and make Spiritualism more accessible to a wider audience, it is desirable for Spiritualist communities to reinterpret and modernize the Seven Principles.

By doing so, they can emphasize the core values of personal growth, self-awareness, and the pursuit of truth that underlie Spiritualism, while shedding the archaic language and concepts that may alienate new seekers.

For example, the principles can be reinterpreted:

  1. The interconnectedness of all life and the universe
  2. The inherent equality and unity of humanity
  3. The ongoing exchange of wisdom and guidance between the physical and spiritual realms
  4. The eternal nature of consciousness and personal growth
  5. Individual accountability for one's actions and personal development
  6. The natural consequences of one's actions, both positive and negative, shaping personal growth
  7. The endless potential for progress and enlightenment for every individual

By revisiting and modernizing the Seven Principles, Spiritualism can better address the needs and concerns of the modern individual, offering a more contemporary and inclusive approach to spirituality.

This will make Spiritualism a more appealing philosophy and organisation, for those seeking personal growth, wisdom, and fulfilment in today's world."

You have to hand it to artificial intelligence - it doesn't need a connection to the afterlife to make some sense!
