Not that Van Gogh discovered the concept – automatic writing has been used by creatives for hundreds of years. It’s that he used it, accessing a realm of creativity and insight that often seems to come from someplace other than his own will.
In this blog, we will uncover more about automatic writing, its connection to channeling and how you can use automatic writing to connect with your spirit guide, in order to access your best writing. Automatic writing is a technique/practice used for centuries. Vincent Van Gogh described a version of it in his many letters to his brother Theo.
This is automatic writing: actually, the act of letting a writer’s hand move freely – often so freely that it feels it’s the words, not its hand, dashing across the paper, feeling like one is actually channelling words. I’ve discovered that automatic writing is very useful as an important stage in the writing process, or for someone who wishes to have a deeper writing practice. Sometimes automatic writing can be a source of revelations or insights, or it leads to a new line of thought that borders on a new idea.
Historically, many writers of renown have reported receiving similar forms of automatic writing. They’ve described having a sensation that the words are coming from somewhere else, as if dictated by an invisible being.
At its compelling best, this experience can seem almost supernatural, particularly if mixed with a sense of spiritual intention, as in working with the guidance of a spirit medium.

In many spiritual contexts, spirit guides are believed to be supernatural beings who give you words of wisdom, caring and guidance from the spirit world. They can help you navigate difficult situations and learn things you might otherwise not know on your own.
Others believe your spirit guide is actually you, accessing a subconscious level of wisdom.
Once you start to practise automatic writing, you may find that your spirit guide (whoever it is), participates to varying degrees, inspiring ideas and themes, and you may eventually find another purpose in your life and more of what you have come to learn.
If you want to establish a rapport with your spirit guide, try this right afterwards: When you connect with your spirit guide and become aware of their presence – whether you consciously ‘see’ them, feel them or sense their energy – it can enhance your automatic writing practice. Here’s some instructions to help you create this connection:
Set Your Intentions: Before beginning your writing session, take a moment to set clear intentions. Consider what you hope to achieve through this process, whether it’s gaining insight, inspiration, or clarity.
Find a Quiet Space: Choose a peaceful environment where you can focus without distractions. This will help you tune into your inner self and the presence of your spirit guide.
Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness techniques such as meditation or deep breathing to centre yourself. This can help you become more receptive to the messages from your spirit guide.
Invite Your Spirit Guide: Ask you guide to draw close and as you sit with pen and paper.
Ask Open-Ended Questions: When you feel ready, start your automatic writing session by asking questions that invite guidance. This could lead to deeper insights and a more meaningful connection.
Which questions you ask your spirit guide is very important, so ask questions that allow for reflection and gaining understanding. Here are some examples of good questions to ask:
What do I need to focus on right now?
How can I improve my current situation?
What lessons am I supposed to learn from my recent experiences?
How can I overcome the challenges I'm facing?
What steps can I take to foster my personal growth?
In what areas of my life should I seek more balance?
How can I better align with my life's purpose?
Are there any messages or insights you have for me at this moment?
How can I deepen my connection with you and my inner self?
What can I do to contribute more positively to the world around me?
These questions are intended to encourage understanding, expansion, and further exploration. As important as the questions are the intentions driving them.

Keep your intention clear throughout automatic writing and your connection with your spirit guide and your heart set on insight and understanding, with the intention of learning and growing. This makes for a much better place for revelations to step in.
Pay attention to the ebbs and flows of emotion that occur as you write. This openness might reveal fledgling insights – and a stronger relationship with your spirit guide.
Automatic writing ‘is an unlocking experience’ and ‘every time a person allows themself to be an instrument for their spirit guide to work with, they transcend to a new order of creativity and insight’.
But remember, it’s not about the final outcome – however necessary and engaging that might be – but about the process of exploration and discovery itself: of allowing the train of thought and feeling to unfold as a means of touching that higher world of consciousness.

Automatic writing is more than a mechanical process. It is a threshold to spiritual awareness and creative expression. If you interact with your spirit guide and ask the right questions, it can be a powerful way to improve your writing and gain insight into your life’s journey.
So, get out your pen and paper, set your intention, and start writing: one never knows what pearls of wisdom lie just on the other side of your conscious self!
